"Learn How to Give Your Child an Elite Education at Home and Enjoy It Too." Schools across Santa Clara County are reopening with a 100% virtual education plan. Parents need our support, as they oversee their children's education at home. Elizabeth Hanson is a homeschooling expert. Parents of children in public school may learn more about homeschooling best practices with a 1-1 consultation or class. Elizabeth offers these services and may be contacted through her website: https://smarthomeschooler.com/
Individuals, families, and groups may volunteer required hours for the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. A student gets credit for a family award when the student volunteers the minimum number of hours towards the family's total volunteer hours. Contact us for a list of virtual volunteer activities for children.
Dan Osborne has hosted swim camps at private homes in the Bay Area for years. I hosted one of his camps in August 2020 for safety concerns related to swimming ability. The camp enrollment of 14 children, ages 0-7, was organized into pods of 2 and 3 children. Children from the same household were put in the same pod. Each pod was assigned a 30 minute swim lesson and arrival times were staggered accordingly. If you are interested in hosting or attending one of Dan's swim camps across the 5 warmest months of the year I highly recommend reaching out to Dan--> http://www.swim2dan.com/
Privilege Walk Exercise: This activity may be used after trust and rapport have been established in the group. Participants form a line and have the space to take 10 steps backward or 10 steps forward. Ten questions related to privilege are asked and participants take one step forward or one step backwards, depending upon their answer. For example, "If both of your parents graduated from college take one step forward." The exercise is followed up with discussion questions. (This is an activity to be adapted to a virtual experience or held off until schools move into Phase 2 or Phase 3 of the reopening plan.)

Recommended Literature: I recently consulted with a doctor from Stanford University's Graduate School of Education around the issue of privilege voiced by 4 young ladies in a SUSD board meeting August 2020. I will be adding his recommended literature here soon!
